Designing age-friendly cities through participative software development?
- Created: 24 April 2018
Juliane Jarke and Ulrike Gerhard address this question in an article recently published in the IzR's current issue on "Online Participation in Urban Development".
They report on their experiences in the joint development of a digital district guide for and with older people in the MobileAge project and they analyse the potential of such processes to influence urban development. In their case, it is about the development of cities towards more "age-friendliness". The "co-creative" development of spatial digital services can reveal shortcomings in the spatial environment and make them public. In addition to the knowledge of specific needs, this can also increase the pressure on public authorities to act, which in return creates opportunities to design urban spaces together. In addition to online participation processes in spatial planning and development, "co-creative" development processes offer potential for citizen participation in urban development.
